Spring Skincare basics

Dial it back a notch.

Spring has well and truly sprung, and with it a brand-new climate for your skin to adjust to. With September’s cold-snap out of the way, now’s as good a time as any to explore a skincare routine befitting the warmer temps.

Winter is all about packing in as much moisture in as possible with a bevy of serums and lotions. And while we don’t recommend hoiking these just yet, Spring skincare requires a little less diligence in the moisture department.

The cold, dry snap of winter air is behind us (for the most part) and Spring air provides a much-needed reprieve. Rising humidity and warmer days are a godsend for dry, itchy skin.

Each season carries with it inherent pro’s and con’s, of course, and Spring is no different. These are our Spring skincare basics to keep you and your skin fresh well into the tail end of 2020.

THE BASICS

The same core skincare tactics you’ve been employing up until this point remain necessary, namely cleansing and moisturising. That being said, you can leave the heavy-duty lotions behind in favour of lighter formulations. You should be able to get by no problem with a moisturiser alone, now the air is a little more forgiving and we’re not haemorrhaging moisture. However, if you should be so inclined, a little hyaluronic will never go astray.

ANTIOXIDANTS

Antioxidants serve a multitude of purposes in skincare. Chiefly among them, and pertinent to today’s topic, is antioxidants ability to form a barrier against the onslaught of environmental harassers that the skin faces, particularly from free radicals. Free radicals act to deteriorate our skin at a cellular level and are spurred on by UV rays, pollution, smoke…you get the idea. In Spring, the air is a little heavier with pollutants and the sun has a little more bite to it, making an antioxidant the perfect addition to your skincare routine to mitigate some of the damage associated with both.

EXFOLIATE

Winter leaves us dry and crusty, and if you’ve recovered already, hats off to you. If not, you may be in need of an exfoliation.

A common misconception with exfoliating is that dry skin should be left alone. Not so. The dry skin you have accrued from the cooler months could do with the shakedown that an exfoliator provides. That’s not to say you shouldn’t be gentle with your skin, however. Opt for a chemical, non-invasive exfoliant to peel away the layers and reveal the fresh, Spring ready skin underneath.

SPF

Along with an antioxidant, an SPF should be your first line of defence against UVA/UVB rays. Opt for a lotion of at least SPF 50 and apply every day. No if, but’s or maybe’s, this is the most important step in any Spring skincare routine. Develop this habit now and be a pro by the time the sun kicks it up a notch for Summer.

PRACTICALITY

On top of your skincare, there are some important steps you can take in your day-to-day that will help stave off some the negative impacts of a Spring climate. If you’re gyming on the reg, chances are your sweat output has doubled. Shower as soon as you can after a workout to cleanse your skin of the bacteria living in sweat. Breakouts be gone!

Another step you can take to keep blemishes at bay is to change your pillowcase at least once a week. We spend a great deal of time conked out on these, leaving grime and bacteria in our place welcome us warmly on each return to dreamland. Trust us, you’re going to want to freshen up pretty regularly here.

While not so dissimilar from previous seasons, Spring carries with it certain temperate changes which affect our skin that are worth your taking stock of. Keep these tips in mind when building out your Spring skincare to remain at your best
