Asking who needs to exfoliate is like asking who needs to listen to James Brown. The answer being everybody, obviously.
The simple reason is that this gentle – gonna be quite liberal with the use of that word – buffing removes dead skin cells and allows younger, fresher, firmer ones to come through.
Kinda like the way they introduce new Victoria’s Secret Angels at every parade.
So let’s break it down.
If you train, you need to exfoliate, as sweat can clog the pores in a major way.
If you live anywhere the summers are humid – say Singapore, Shanghai or Sydney – you need to exfoliate to get rid of the pollutants and grime which often cause skin issues.
Got a beard? There’s no better way to loosen up painful ingrown hairs. Even if you’ve got sensitive skin, a good scrub will do your dermis good.
Now you know the ‘why’, it’s crucial you also know the ‘how’ and ‘when’.
We’re talking twice a week – no more. Seriously, more than twice a week can be counterproductive.
Technique is key here. The microscopic particles that do the work don’t need you to supply the power. Gentle circular motions will suffice. You don’t have to feel scratches for the formulations to do their work. Nor do you have to apply any more than the most subtle of pressure.
And just in case there was any doubt, do not put it onto dry skin. As with so many other areas in life, you want a moist surface to work on. A minute or two will do (don’t forget the neck zone) and rinse off.
One final word of warning, the cheaper exfoliants sometimes use tiny plastic beads to slough away cells – these are not only so-so on your skin but devastating on our environment. So much so they have been banned in many nations.
Instead, you want a formulation that includes buffing agents such as microscopic walnut shell or bamboo particles.
