Teeth are like Donald Trump’s Republican voter base. Just when you think they couldn’t get any whiter, they become so.

We all want sparkling chompers and there are proven ways to get them without the expense of veneers. It’s just a matter to remaining dedicated, because if yours are straying to a light yellow, it’s gonna take time to resume normal business.

You know the first step. It’s what your dentist has been telling you for years. Upping your brushing regime to twice daily with a whitening paste will begin to yield results within a few weeks. A mouthwash will help too. Especially if it, too, is a whitening formula.

For both pastes and mouthwashes, opt for your big multinational brands who have the millions of dollars to plunge into r&d rather than the niche outfits that freshen and look good on your bathroom shelf.

A better toothbrush than what you’ve got now will also hasten the process. By which we mean an electric version that your tired little wrist could never compete with in terms of oscillation, attention to detail and a dedicated whitening mode. The best also have an accompanying app so you can ensure proper brushing technique.

To bridge the gap between what is and what can be, check out some of the whitening pens available. These are painted onto clean teeth after meals/before dates and can lift your shade instantly. They last for a few hours or at least until you’ve sealed the deal. Whatever that may be.

A step up in your arsenal are at home whitening kits. These generally consist of a mouth guard into which a gel is dispensed. The guard is then clamped between the teeth and exposed to LED light which activates the gel. The brand leader here is Hi Smile, which touts maximum results in six ten minute sessions. And by maximum results, they mean up to eight shades whiter. These should set you back around $80.

If you have a bigger budget – around $700 – and your sights set on upwards of 10 shades lighter, you’ll need to see your dentist. And we all know how much fun that is. Still, the Philips Zoom Whitening treatment is a market leader for a reason.
